Vista Unified School District Speech Pathologists, Christine Goan and Dawn Shirvanian supervised seven graduate students in the Graduate Speech-Language Pathology program at CSUSM over the summer break. They enrolled 16 VUSD entering 1st and 2nd graders (for the 2013-2014 school year). Their initial pre-assessment included an analyzed narrative language sample and a district language screening. The children attended an assessment day and 21 straight days of four hour language sessions. The grad students developed two language goals (after reviewing and referencing grade level Common Core Language Arts standards) for each child that were addressed during the clinic. The focus was a literacy approach to language development. All of the graduate students used well-researched methodologies to support oral language and literacy skills. Daily language objectives were written for all large and small group sessions. The graduate students were instructed on ways to release the cognitive load to all groups and modify task complexity for each child individually. The graduate students gathered data throughout the clinic on all children and completed post-assessments. The children had a wonderful time and demonstrated amazing progress on their goals with the intense language support.
