Vista Unified has been tracking the COVID-19 County News Center data and community spread during the summer months. The good news is that the vaccination rate for San Diego County is strong, with more than 2 million San Diegans receiving the first dose of vaccination. This translates to over 80% of people 12 years of age and older getting their first dose of the vaccination. Over 69% of San Diegans are fully vaccinated as of July 21, 2021. There have been over 4.19 million doses of the vaccination administered so far.


As a county, we are still facing challenges with this virus. There is an alarming development in the COVID positive case rate in San Diego. In the last seven days, there were 3,465 COVID-19 cases reported in San Diego. This represents an 82% increase in positive cases.  The increase in cases in primarily among unvaccinated individuals. The county case rate as of July 20, 2021 is 7.6 per 100,000 residents. The percentage of new positive cases in 6.6%. The 14 day rolling percentage of positive cases among tests is 5.1%. 

“The best protection we have against COVID-19 is getting vaccinated,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “The vaccines are extremely effective at preventing serious illness from COVID-19. If you have not gotten immunized, do it now.”
