Mission Vista High School PE Waiver

Mission Vista High School (MVHS)  is on a 4 x 4 block schedule where students in 9th grade are enrolled in a physical education course for only half of the academic year. Last year, The District obtained two waivers from the  from the California State Board of Education related to physical education requirements for students on a 4x4 block schedule. One of the waivers pertains to the time of year in which the state’s Physical Fitness Test (PFT) is administered; this waiver has expired, and Mission Vista is applying for a permanent waiver with the state to allow students to take the PFT during the term in which they have a physical education class.

Education Code 60800(a) requires during the months from February through May, the District is required to administer to each pupil in grades 5, 7, and 9 physical performance tests designated by the State also known as the Physical Fitness Test (PFT). Students at MVHS enrolled in the first term for PE are not able to complete the state required PFT as it is administered in the second semester in PE class. The District is seeking a waiver from the language that requires the PFT testing "exclusively" during the months from February through May and instead have the flexibility to administer the PFT to students at MVHS during the fall semester.

In order to be granted a permanent waiver from the State, several requirements must be in place. The site must gain approval of the school site council of MVHS, involve the collective bargaining unit (VTA), and have a public hearing on the waiver requests. The public hearing will allow concerned parents and stakeholders to speak on the issue.
